[X] Last Breath

"Better"

submission: [X] Last Breath
date: July 1, 2009

Great improvement overall, but heres why theres no 10 this time. (still a 5 vote ofcourse.)

1. Duration - You've got a good thing going here and quite an awesome buildup at 1:00 but you cut the climactic riff short and as such the song really doesnt reach its full potential.

2. Guitar Open singles - These samples are quite good as they are but with some vibrato on that (a growing value in both speed and tone depth is my way of doing it) will give them more vitality in the mix aswell as allowing them to blend in better.

Positivie notes: The improvement in composing riffs is clear and a great leap forward. The drums are insanely good and the overall songstructure and mood is pure, diehard metal.

You're kicking some major ass now, and I think it's high time you move up to an application matching your skills.

If you're still using ModPlug tracker (which is great to start out with) it may start to feel very limiting soon, if its not allready. Renoise is what I use and what you should be using. PM me about it.

Finally, great fucking work, Jonathan!

July 1, 2009

Author's Response:

Thanks man, you're review are awesome! I've been messing around with vibrato, but Modplug isn't very great for it. I'm definitely ready to upgrade.

I did notice that the end is cut off. I'm not sure why I didn't notice when I first submitted it. I think I might try to make it longer.

Anyways, glad you liked my song, and thanks for the review! I'll PM you about Renoise.

"Hmmm"

submission: [X] Merciless

The intro riff works but instead of just adding more layers of guitarriffs, i suggest you work on developing and that riff you have going on there. maybe add more open power chords. Also, this is like the verse riff you got going, you need a bridge and refrain riff aswell. Theres alot that can be done with this song, but you're the only one qualified for the job, if you know what I mean. ;D

The drums were highly impressive in this though the mix needs a little more work. The cymbals sound like tremolo whenever the kick is pounding away fast. Other than that, excellent work, my friend. Looking forward to hearing more of this.

No doubt that you've improved alot, btw.

June 17, 2009

Author's Response:

Yeah, I need to work on not using only one riff for an entire song. I'm not quite sure what a refrain riff is, but I've heard the term bridge before, and I'll try to incorporate one next time.

I totally know what you mean about the cymbals. Addictive Drums has at least 6 different compressors going by default, and I turned 2 or 3 off, but they really help with other things like the toms and snare. I think that cutting off some of the kick drums lower frequencies should help though, now that I think of it.

Anyways, thanks a bunch for the review. I'm glad that I've improved :D

Well, sir...

It's unique.

But to be more specific... It kind of develops into a cacophony of sound rather than a wellflowing ensemble. Though I do enjoy it, it may be harder for most to listen to it as that LFO thing you got going at 0:47 is completely on its own, rythmwise.

You've got it in you to make good music, and listening to some of your other stuff, you go for genres that are very rare here on the Audioportal so keep going, my friend.

You can do it!

June 16, 2009

Author's Response:

Wow, another long useful review! Thanks for the encouragement. I do try and be unique, that's the point, loads of things I listen to on NG have similar melodies and ideas, but I wanted to move away from that, and viola! It's me, Orangepot! And thanks for calling me 'sir'.

Exceptional work. The riffs are tight as hell, the drums sound incredible, and the tempo shifts are brilliant. That breakdown at 2:35 REALLY gave moshpit vibes.

Another solo wouldn't have hurt the song but hey... fuck that.

This is oldschool metal at its best! You deserve the recognition, friend.

(Shameless self-advertising time: If you got a few minutes... well closer to 40 of them, listen through my Ultima Eternus tracks. I get this feeling you will enjoy em.)

Rucklo - Forfeit

"Hmmm"

submission: Rucklo - Forfeit
date: June 11, 2009

It's got a nice beat going, and the drums sound pretty good apart from the snare. Gives a little too much 80's ballad snare vibes.

I do however like the contrast of having that reverbed snare together with completely dry synths.

Overall, nice work, Rucklo.

it really would need alot more work to make it more versatile, but i probably won't be doing that. or maybe i will. i dunno. :)

God fucking damn, those vocals really scream out bloody vengeance.

Awesome riffing, tasty drums as allways, I fucking love it. And the intro really set a contrasting mood!
